Rauw Alejandro

In 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track at the time within six months. The single Despacito which was a mix of reggaeton with pop music has not just brought fresh attention to reggaeton music but also sparked interest in Latin music. In 2015 there were only two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 predominantly Spanish songs made it into the top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 of them. Justin Bieber re-mixed Despacito with a Spanish version in 2017 and soon after the most well-known artists began collaborating together with reggaeton groups. Drake teamed with Bad Bunny to create MIA (2018), while Madonna collaborated on Medellin along with Maluma (2019). In 2020, a few Reggaeton musicians were complaining about the advancing of the genre towards the mainstream. But a newer generation like Rauw Alejandro was determined to keep the trend going. It was often associated with electronic dance and other styles.
